چکیده

This work presents the Risk Threshold RED (RTRED) congestion control strategy for TCP networks. In addition to the maximum and minimum thresholds in existing RED-based strategies, we add a third dropping level. This new dropping level is the risk threshold which works with the actual and average queue sizes to detect the immediate congestion in gateways. Congestion reaction by RTRED is on time. The reaction to congestion is neither too early, to avoid unfair packet losses, nor too late to avoid packet dropping from time-outs. We compared our novel strategy with RED and ARED strategies for TCP congestion handling using a NS-2 simulation script. We found that the RTRED strategy outperformed RED and ARED. Keywords—AQM, congestion control, RED, TCP.

Comparative study of RED , ECN and TCP Rate

TCP congestion control is designed for network stability, robustness and opportunistic use of network buuer and bandwidth resources on an end-to-end per-connection basis. However its loss-based control strategy results in poor fairness properties which is the primary cause of the \World Wide Wait" problem. In this paper, we evaluate three proposed solutions for these problems-an improved drop s...

Analysis of Active Queue Management

Active Queue Management (AQM) is intended to achieve high link utilization with a low queuing delay. Recent studies show that RED, one of the most well-known AQMs, is difficult to configure and does not provide significant performance gains given the complexity required for proper configuration. Recent variants of RED, such as Adaptive-RED are designed to provide more robust RED performance und...

Tcp with Ecn: the Case of Two Simultaneous Downloads

We study the effect of Explicit Congestion Notification on TCP performance for two simultaneous large file transfers. We compare this performance with that achieved using other congestion avoidance mechanisms, namely Drop Tail and RED. Our results show that TCP performance improves, in certain cases significantly, with ECN both for individual flows and the network as a whole.

Using ‘Drop-Biasing’ to Stabilize the Occupancy of Random-Drop Queues with TCP Traffic

The paper describes how the use of ‘drop-biasing’, a technique to control the distribution of the gap between consecutive packet losses in random drop queues (such as RED) can be used to reduce the variability of the queue occupancy with TCP traffic. Reducing the variance of the queue occupancy reduces delay jitter for buffered packets, as well as decreases the likelihood of buffer underflow. W...

Evolution and Optimization of Active Queue Management Algorithms over High Bandwidth Aggregates

Due to enormous growth of the Internet, demands for access from multiple users and request for new services for its applications have also increased significantly. In a result there is a rise in packet loss rates and drop in network efficiency. In addition, the inability to support new services has severely hindered the widespread deployment of bandwidth-sensitive applications. So the success o...
